General description

Carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide is the primary, active metabolite in both urine and serum of carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant drug used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder as well as trigeminal neuralgia. Potential toxicity of the epoxide metabolite requires regular therapeutic drug monitoring by LC or LC/MS for patients taking carbamazepine.

Application

  • Advanced Analytical Techniques for Carbamazepine Epoxide: A study utilized covalent organic framework-based solid-phase microextraction coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry for sensitive screening and quantitative evaluation of carbamazepine and its metabolite, Carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide, in mice, advancing biochemical research reagents and methodologies (Huang et al., 2022).

  • Carbamazepine Metabolite Monitoring: Research developed an HPLC method for the determination of antiepileptic drugs including Carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide in human saliva, facilitating therapeutic drug monitoring and offering a non-invasive technique for patient compliance and drug metabolism studies (Carona et al., 2021).

  • Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Antiepileptic Drugs: A novel capillary microsampling device, Microsampling Wing (MSW), was evaluated for its effectiveness in handling antiepileptic drugs such as Carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide in rats, enhancing drug discovery processes by providing a minimally invasive sampling method for pharmacokinetic studies (Hotta et al., 2021).
