General description

Dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) belongs to the phosphatidylcholine (PCs) family. It is composed of saturated and symmetric phospholipids with 14 carbon atoms. DMPC is zwitterionic glycerophospholipid and is associated with mammalian membranes.
The list of Phosphatidylcholine products offered by Avanti is designed to provide compounds having a variety of physical properties. Products available include short chain (C3-C8 are water soluble and hygroscopic), saturated, multi-unsaturated and mixed acid PC′s. All of the products are purified by HPLC, and special precautions are taken to protect the products for oxidization and hydrolysis.

Application

14:0 PC (DMPC) has been used:
  • in the preparation of liposomes for dissipation monitoring and perforin binding and assembly by Quartz crystal microscopy studies.
  • in anthraquinone liposomes generation for spectral studies
  • in bicelles preparation along with phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate for in vitro reconstitution of β2-adrenergic receptor

Biochem/physiol Actions

Dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) in combination with cholesterol is used as biomembrane model. Oral supplementation of DMPC in apolipoprotein (apo) E−null mice, improves high density lipoprotein levels and other lipid profiles, preventing the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
