General description
Cholestanol-d5 is a deuterated form of cholestanol. Cholestanol is a plant saturated sterol and has Δ5 double bond to the 5α position in the cholesterol structure and is a 5α-dihydro derivative of cholesterol.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Cholestanol deuterated has been administered in small intestine samples for the quantification of sterols by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The levels of cholesterol and cholestanol are elevated in tendons and brain in cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis due to the CYP27A1 (Cytochrome P450 Family 27 Subfamily A Member 1) deficiency. Cholestanol-d5 is useful as an internal standard to spike sediment samples for tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) for fecal sterol quantification. Cholestanol is a cholesterol absorption biomarker.

Microbial water quality and sedimentary faecal sterols as markers of sewage contamination in Kuwait.
Marine pollution bulletin, 100(2), 689-698 (2015-08-01)
Microbial water quality and concentrations of faecal sterols in sediment have been used to assess the degree of sewage contamination in Kuwait's marine environment. A review of microbial (faecal coliform, faecal streptococci and Escherichia coli) water quality data identified temporal

Large amounts of cholestanol, the 5 alpha-dihydro derivative of cholesterol are found in tissues of patients with the rare inherited sterol storage disease cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis. Although small amounts of cholestanol are present in virtually every tissue of normal man, little
Journal of lipid research, 51(9), 2722-2730 (2010-06-01)
The rare disease cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is due to a lack of sterol 27-hydroxylase (CYP27A1) and is characterized by cholestanol-containing xanthomas in brain and tendons. Mice with the same defect do not develop xanthomas. The driving force in the development

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) and Lathosterolosis represent two treatable inherited disorders of cholesterol metabolism that are characterized by the accumulation of cholestanol and lathosterol, respectively. The age of the patients suspected of having these disorders is highly variable due to the

The recent identification of the aberrant transport proteins ABCG5 and ABCG8 resulting in sitosterolemia suggests that intestinal uptake of cholesterol is an unselective process, and that discrimination between cholesterol and plant sterols takes place at the level of sterol efflux
