General description

Ceramides containing 2-hydroxy fatty acids (hFA) are present in the surface epithelium of the skin. 24:0(2R-OH) Ceramide is a 2R hydroxylated lignoceric acid -containing sphingolipid. hFA-ceramides are synthesized by the enzyme fatty acid 2-hydroxylase (FA2H). hFA-ceramides aid in epidermal permeability barrier function.

2-Hydroxylated fatty acid (HFA)-containing sphingolipids are abundant in mammalian skin and are believed to play a role in the formation of the epidermal barrier. Fatty acid 2-hydroxylase (FA2H), required for the synthesis of 2-hydroxylated sphingolipids in various organs, is highly

Unique species of ceramide (Cer) with very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (VLCPUFA), mainly 28-32 carbon atoms, 4-5 double bonds, in nonhydroxy and 2-hydroxy forms (n-V Cer and h-V Cer, respectively), are generated in rat spermatozoa from the corresponding sphingomyelins during the
