General description
The synergistic effect of high concentration of thiosulfate, citrate and strong alkalinity inhibits the growth of Enterobacteriaceae spp. The medium is highly selective as the bile salts present in the medium suppresses the growth of Enterococci spp.
The differentiation is achieved based on sucrose fermentation, pH indicators and H2S production from thiosulfate. Vibrio spp. do not produce H2S but depending on the species, may ferment sucrose. Peptone and yeast extract in the media allow good growth and agar is the solidifying agent.
Application
Analysis Note
- The dehydrated medium is a granulate with green color.
- The prepared medium is clear to slightly opalescent and blue-green.
Footnote
The designations basic, plus, or prime are added to indicate the quality control level, from basic quality control to standard QC plus to prime for full regulatory compliance.
