General description

Punicalagin is one of the main ellagitannins (ETs) or hydrolyzable tannins present in pomegranate.[1][2] The chemical structure of punicalagin consists of gallagic acid and ellagic acid connected through a glucose molecule. It has two (α and β) isomeric forms that can be found in the pomegranate.[3][4]

Application

Punicalagin has been used in the inhibition assay to check its anti-fungal effects on two C. albicans strains.[5] It has also been used as a polyphenolic compound to probe pyroptosis in macrophages[6] and monocytes.[7]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Potent immune suppressant isolated from pomegranate.
Punicalagin exhibits an antioxidant effect.[1][2] Ellagitannins like punicalagin cannot be absorbed directly in humans. First, it converts to ellagic acid, which is further converted to bioavailable urolithin A derivative by human colonic microflora.[8] It elicits an inhibitory effect on nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) signaling pathway which in turn protects against cancer,[9] neuroinflammation, oxidative stress and memory impairment.[10] It has antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against S. aureus.[11]

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. Is it good to penetrate the cell membrane in cell culture of HepG2 cells or which type of Punicalagin should i use ?

    1 answer
    1. No specific cell membrane permeability studies have been performed using Punicalagin. A review of the scientific literature does indicate an application involving punicalagin treatment of HepG2 cells using this product for a study involving lipid droplet and lipotoxicity. Please see the citation for this article below.
