Application

Sodium polytungstate (SPT) is widely used to produce heavy liquid for sink /float analysis (gravity separation) and density gradient centrifugation due to its very high solubility in water.[1]

Other Notes

A new medium for density-gradient centrifugation, the density can be adjusted to up to 3.1 g/ml[2][3]

An increasing number of studies constrain the importance of iron for the long-term retention of phosphorus (P) under anoxic conditions, i.e. the formation of reduced iron phosphate minerals such as vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2⋅8H2O). Much remains unknown about vivianite formation, the factors

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. What is the purity of this product? Will there be C or N contamination?

    1 answer
    1. This product is an 85% solution. The purity and trace elements is not determined. The concentration is verified by gravimetric analysis, which is reported in the lot specific Certificate of Analysis. Please see the link below to review a sample or lot specific certificate:

  2. I would like to ask how and how much grams do I need to prepare 1200 ml solution at a density of 1.6g/cm3

    1 answer
    1. Sodium Polytungstenate (SPT) has not been investigated for use in the preparation of heavy liquids. A brief search of the literature reveals information that may be helpful. The maximum achievable density, 3.10 g/cm³, is prepared from 133 g of SPT in 22 grams of deionized water at 20°C. A density of 1.56 g/cm³ may be prepared from 35.01 g of SPT in 42.94 grams of deionized water. A density of 1.73 g/cm³ may be prepared from 45.15 g of SPT in 41.10 grams of deionized water. Using the same ratios and adjusting the volume of water or the amount of SPT experimentally, would be the best method to achieve a specific volume at the desired density of 1.6 g/cm³.
