General description
Human Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a 660 kDa, dimeric protein produced by and used entirely within the thyroid gland. Human Thyroglobin is used by the thyroid gland to produce the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyryonine. Patients with Hashimoto′s thyroiditis or Grave′s disease, frequently develop antibodies against human Thyroglobulin.

Thryoglobulin levels in the blood can be used as a tumor marker for certain kinds of thyroid cancer and in Graves′ disease.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Thyroglobulin has been shown to induce expression of platelet activating factor in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells which is found elevated in some patients with thyroid disease.
