General description
This product is an extract of E. coli B (ATCC 11303) grown in Kornberg Minimal media at 37°C and taken at 3/4 log growth phase. Total E. coli lipid extract is a chloroform:methanol extract of the respective tissue. This extract is partitioned against deionized water and the chloroform phase is concentrated.
Application
E. coli Extract Total has been used in the preparation of unilamellar vesicles in lipid screening experiments of membrane protein green fluorescent protein (GFP) based fusion proteins and in the reconstitution of proteoliposomes.
Biochem/physiol Actions
The E. coli lipid extract is a combination of 16, 17 and 18 carbon containing phospholipids namely, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and cardiolipin. It is used for preparing supported lipid bilayers. The E. coli lipid extract serves as a standard for profiling phospholipids, aids in identification and taxonomic grouping of any bacterial sample.
