Descrizione generale

Potassium ferricyanide(III) is a potassium salt widely employed as an external indicator in potassium dichromate titrations. A sensor containing potassium ferricyanide assisted enzyme electrode for estimating maltose and glucose in samples has been reported.[1] Addition of potassium ferricyanide in the catholyte can improve the generation of power in microbial fuel cells (MFCs).[2]

Applicazioni

Potassium ferricyanide(III) has been used:
  • To prepare the X-gal staining solution for staining cryosectioned tissues of injured neonatal mouse heart.[3]
  • Reducing power assay of freeze-dried ethanolic extract of Issopus officinalis.[4]
  • In combination with glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide for post-fixation of biological samples prior to epoxy embedding.[5]

Questions

1–6 of 6 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  4. Is there a reference for using Potassium Ferricyanide, Product 702587, in the Turnbull Blue reaction?

    1 answer
    1. There are many variations on the basic Turnbull Blue technique. A commonly performed procedure is the procedure of Lillie and Geer. See Lillie, R.D. & Geer, J.C. On the relation of enterosiderosis pigments of man and guinea pig, melanosis and melanosis of colon and villi and the intestinal iron update and storage mechanism.  American Journal of Pathology, 47, 965-1007 (1965).

  5. After diluting Potassium Ferricyanide, Product 702587, with water, I observed that the solution turned blue, and not the typical brownish-yellow color. Is that a problem?

    1 answer
    1. This likely means that your water contains some iron (II) (i.e., ferrous iron). Potassium ferricyanide and hydrochloric acid are actually the reagents typically used to demonstrate ferrous salts using the Turnbull Blue reaction.

  6. There are several other Potassium ferricyanide(III) products available.  How does Product No. 702587 differ from other chemically identical products?

    1 answer
    1. Specifications are available for each product.  Product No. 702587 is the only Potassium ferricyanide(III) product available from Sigma-Aldrich that has a particle size of <10 μm. The other products are generally described as either powders or crystals.
