General description

B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) is an anti-apoptotic and target gene of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB). The protein is expressed in the nuclear envelope, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. The gene encoding BCL-2 is localized on human chromosome 18q21.

Immunogen

Synthetic peptide corresponding to N-terminus of human BCL-2 alpha protein.

Biochem/physiol Actions

B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) inhibits apoptosis in cells and has been shown to be upregulated in adenomas. Expression of BCL-2α oncoprotein inhibits the programmed cell death (apoptosis). In most follicular lymphomas, neoplastic germinal centers express high levels of BCL-2α protein, whereas the normal or hyperplastic germinal centers are negative.

Intestinal tumour formation is generally thought to occur following mutational events in the stem cell pool. However, active NF-κB signalling additionally facilitates malignant transformation of differentiated cells. We hypothesized that genes shared between NF-κB and intestinal stem cell (ISCs) signatures
