Derived from a Rous sarcoma virus (Schmidt-Ruppin strain) induced tumour in an inbred Amsterdam rat. The cells are highly tumorigenic in new-born rats and also chickens. There is some evidence that the cell line is latently infected with the virus.

Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:2 to 1:6 i.e. seeding at 2-4x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.25% trypsin; 5% CO2; 37°C.
