Application

Transferrin is an important supplement in serum-free tissue culture media.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Transferrin is glycoprotein, approx. 80 kDa, with two binding sites for iron. It transports iron from its primary store in the liver to tissues that require iron, primarily bone marrow and spleen, but also brain. It binds Fe3+ extremely tightly (Kdiss 10-30 to 10-27), protecting against oxidant effects of free plasma iron.
