General description

Cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate, also known as cobaltous chloride hexahydrate, is a hydrated form of cobalt and chloride. It is a crystalline solid consisting of octahedral complexes, with the coordination polyhedron of the Co2+ ion including four H2O molecules and two Cl ions. It is highly soluble in water and is commonly used as a catalyst in various organic synthesis, such as during the synthesis of benzimidazole and biscoumarin derivatives.

Application

Cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate can be used as a catalyst for the:
  • Dioxygenation of styrenes with N-hydroxyphthalimide to synthesize corresponding alcohols and ketones.
  • Oxidative coupling of primary amines to imines.
  • Friedel-Crafts reaction between indoles and activated olefins to synthesize β-indolylketones.
  • Synthesis of β-enaminones and β-enamino esters.
  • Reaction of acyl chlorides with diselenides or disulfides to synthesize selenol and thiol esters.
