This gene encodes a molecular chaperone that is member of the chaperonin containing TCP1 complex (CCT), also known as the TCP1 ring complex (TRiC). This complex consists of two identical stacked rings, each containing eight different proteins. Unfolded polypeptides enter the central cavity of the complex and are folded in an ATP-dependent manner. The complex folds various proteins, including actin and tubulin. Alternate transcriptional splice variants of the gene described in this record have been observed but have not been thoroughly characterized.

Uncontrolled proliferation as a result of dysregulated cell cycling is one of the hallmarks of cancer. Therapeutically targeting pathways that control the cell cycle would improve patient outcomes. However, the development of drug resistance and a limited number of inhibitors
Chaperonin-containing TCP-1 (CCT or TRiC) is a multi-subunit complex that folds many of the proteins essential for cancer development. CCT is expressed in diverse cancers and could be an ideal therapeutic target if not for the fact that the complex
