General description

α-Tocopherol acetate is a fat soluble vitamin and a form of vitamin E. It can be obtained through dietary sources. RRRα-Tocopherol is a natural form of α-tocopherol.

Application

(+)-α-Tocopherol acetate has been used:
  • as a component of growth medium for retinal cell lines
  • as an external standard in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to study its composition in leafy vegetables
  • in the preparation of trans-resveratrol-encapsulated lipid nanocarriers (R-nano)

Biochem/physiol Actions

α-Tocopherol is also known as a radical-chain breaker due to its anti-oxidant property.
Tocopherols (TCP) (vitamin E) are a series (α, β,γ and δ) of chiral organic molecules that vary in their degree of methylation of the phenol moiety of the chromanol ring. Tocopherols are lipid soluble anti-oxidants that protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. α-Tocopherol is the form of tocopherol preferentially absorbed by homo sapiens. Tocopherol acetate has properties similar but not identical to α-tocopherol.

Caution

Does not air oxidize.
