Application

DMSO is a polar aprotic solvent used in chemical reactions, in polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and as a cryoprotectant vitrification agent for the preservation of cells, tissues and organs. DMSO is used in cell freezing media to protect cells from ice crystal induced mechanical injury. It is used for frozen storage of primary, sub-cultured, and recombinant heteroploid and hybridoma cell lines; embryonic stem cells (ESC), and hematopoietic stem cells. DMSO is frequently used in the combinations with BSA or fetal bovine serum (FBS).

Packaging

This product features a liner in the cap designed to prevent leakage. In rare cases, the liner may remain on the neck of the bottle after cap removal. This does not affect the product′s integrity. If this occurs, simply reattach the liner to the cap.
Glass ampoule packaging is now available under a new product number, D2653

Other Notes

This product is a Hybri-Max product. It is hybridoma tested and is assessed for suitability in cell freezing. This product is sterile filtered (0.2 micron) and tested for endotoxin levels.

  3. How many days after opening the bottle is DMSO safe to use?

    1 answer
    1. This product is assigned an expiration date of approximately two years from the date of Quality Release. This date is lot specific and available on the product label and Certificate of Analysis. After opening, the material should be stored tightly sealed to prevent moisture uptake. Given proper handling and storage, the product should be stable until the published expiration date.

  4. I ordered 10 x 10ml vials for fibroblast culture work. My first endeavor in culture domain. What are the storage conditions for DMSO of this grade? This arrived in plain cardboard box at room temperature.

    1 answer
    1. DMSO is hygroscopic and light-sensitive. The storage container must protect from light and moisture uptake. Since this DMSO is sterile-filtered and intended for cell culture applications, the storage containers must also be sterile and endotoxin-free. It is recommended to purge aliquots with inert gas and store them in a compatible, tightly sealed container, at a cool storage area, such as 4°C. DMSO is not compatible with many types of plastics, so it is advisable to store it in appropriate amber glass vials for long-term storage. Please refer to the Safety Data Sheet and the Product Information Sheet for compatibility of DMSO with various materials and for further details.

  7. I ordered 10 ml glass vials, used 7 ml, Can I store it in centrifuge tubes? For how long can I use that?

    1 answer
    1. It may be best to store DMSO in amber glass vials for long term storage, as this compound is not compatible with many types of plastics. The compatibility of DMSO with various materials is listed below:
Compatible: LDPE, HDPE, polypropylene, PPCO(polypropylene copolymer), polymethylpentene, nylon, teflon FEP
      Moderately compatible: polystyrene, ECTFE/ETFE
Incompatible: polysulfone, flexible and rigid PVC tubing, polycarbonate

Note that DMSO is hygroscopic and light sensitive. The storage container selected must offer protection from light and moisture uptake. The product is assigned a firm expiration date. Please refer to the lot specific Certificate of Analysis to assume the material is within the expected shelf life.
