General description

CHAPSO is a non-denaturing zwitterionic bile salt derivative, derived from Chaps by the addition of a functional hydroxyl group.

Application

CHAPSO has been used:
  • in a study to assess the processes of liposome solubilization and reconstitution of two transport proteins
  • in a study to investigate a novel bicelle system for orienting macromolecules over a wide temperature range
  • as a mixture with dilauroyl phosphatidylcholine (DLPC) in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique to study membrane-associated proteins
A nondenaturing zwitterionic detergent with characteristics similar to CHAPS, although it is more soluble due to a more polar head group. Useful for the solubilization of integral membrane proteins.

We have prepared and characterized a novel bicelle system composed of 1,2-di-O-dodecyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DIODPC) and 3-(chloramidopropyl)dimethylammonio-2-hydroxyl-1-propane sulfonate (CHAPSO). At the optimal DIODPC/CHAPSO molar ratio of 4.3:1, this medium becomes magnetically oriented from pH 6.5 down to pH 1.0. Unlike previously reported

The process of liposome solubilization and reconstitution of two transport proteins have been studied using Chaps and Chapso (3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-2- hydroxy-1-propanesulfonate). The solubilization of unilamellar liposomes was followed by absorption experiments and the process was shown to fit well to the

Crystallization of membrane proteins remains a significant challenge. For proteins resistant to the traditional approach of directly crystallizing from detergents, lipidic phase crystallization can be a powerful tool. Bicelles are an excellent medium for crystallizing membrane proteins in a lipidic
