This live cell probe fluoresces in the far red spectral range when it binds to the lipid bilayer in exosome membranes.

Exosomes are a form of extracellular vesicle (EV), which are known to contribute to intercellular communication. To investigate such interactions, labeling techniques based on fluorescent dyes have been employed. Fluorescent dyes that label the plasma membrane are commonly used for exosome labeling because the lipid bilayer in exosomes is a suitable labeling target.

This live culture probe for the detection of exosomes labels the lipid bilayers of exosomal membranes, enabling observation of the uptake of exosomes by cells. Exosomes should be purified before labeling.
