General description

Trimethylated xanthine that acts as a potent central nervous system stimulant. A nonselective phosphodiesterase inhibitor. At higher doses, produces tachycardia and interferes with the uptake and storage of Ca2+ by the sarcoplasmic reticulum in skeletal muscle. Prevents apoptosis and cell cycle effects induced by camptothecin and topotecan in HL-60 cells.

Cis-regulatory elements (CRE) are critical for coordinating gene expression programs that dictate cell-specific differentiation and homeostasis. Recently developed self-transcribing active regulatory region sequencing (STARR-Seq) has allowed for genome-wide annotation of functional CREs. Despite this, STARR-Seq assays are only employed in

The elevated expression of phospholamban (PLB) has been observed in heart failure and cardiac remodelling, inhibiting the affinity of Ca2+ pump to Ca2+ thereby impairing heart relaxation. However, the mechanisms underlying the regulation of PLB remains to be further studied.
