General description

Cardiolipin (CL) is a polyglycerophospholipid. In eukaryotes, CL is exclusively present in the inner mitochondrial membrane. CL species are complex in structure due to variations in the chain length, degree of unsaturation, as well as the permutations of four fatty acid substituents.

Cardiolipin (CL) is synthesized in mitochondria. CL is essential for mitochondrial bioenergetics and signaling.
