General description

Sulfur trioxide (SO3) is an oxide of sulfur. It is released during the combustion of sulfur bearing fuels.[1] Sulfur dioxide in the presence of vanadia catalyst oxidizes to form sulfur trioxide. The kinetics of this reaction has been studied.[2] Density function theory and ab initio methods have been used to study the hydrolysis of SO3 to form sulfuric acid.[3]

Application

Sulfur trioxide (SO3) may be used in the synthesis of methane sulfonic acid (MSA) by sulfonating methane.[4]
