General description

Silicon dioxide based microparticles are ideal to determine particle size distribution (PSD) profile of test samples.
The particle diameter of 5 μm is measured using Coulter Multisizer.

Application

Used for regular calibration and checking of particle size instruments. Also used:
  • to study transport properties of microscopic particles via heterogeneous media[1]
  • as a test standard to validate denoising method used in optical diffraction tomography[2]
  • in accelerated annealing experiments involving colloidal silica monolayers[3]
  • to evaluate the measurement accuracy of color-coded LED microscopy (cLEDscope) technique[4]
  • as a calibration standard in optical trapping system to measure surface mechanical properties[5]

Features and Benefits

  • suitable for routine instrument calibration monitoring, testing and corrections
  • particle size traceable to Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) standards
  • available in 5 mL pack size as a neat sample

Optical diffraction tomography (ODT) is a three-dimensional (3D) quantitative phase imaging technique, which enables the reconstruction of the 3D refractive index (RI) distribution of a transparent sample. Due to its fast, non-invasive, and quantitative imaging capability, ODT has emerged as

Questions

1–5 of 5 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

      Helpful?

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. What kind of methods/protocol is used to fabricate these silica microparticles? and is it bioactive with cells?

    1 answer
    1. The preparation method is considered proprietary. Information on bioactivity with cells is not available.

      Helpful?

  4. Are these Silica particles partly porous? What is the approximate refractive index?

    1 answer
    1. These beads are considered to be non-porous. BET experiments with comparable particles revealed practically no inner surface. As mentioned in the PROPERTIES section, the particle size is 5 μm with a standard deviation of ≤0.35 μm.

      Helpful?

  5. Are these silica particles charged? If yes, the what is surface charge density of these particles.

    1 answer
    1. The silica particles have not been tested for the presence or absence of a charge.
