General description
Molecular sieves are crystalline metal aluminosilicates having a three-dimensional interconnecting network of silica and alumina tetrahedra. Natural water of hydration is removed from this network by heating to produce uniform cavities which selectively adsorb molecules of a specific size. This sodium form represents the basic structure of the type X family, with an effective pore opening in the 910¼ range (for example: it will not adsorb perfluorotributylamine). The 8 to 12-mesh type is common in liquid-phase applications.
Molecular sieves, 13X showed preferential adsorption of CO, over nitrogen or hydrogen at all pressures up to 250psia.
Application
Molecular sieves, 13X may be used for commercial gas drying, air plant-feed purification (simultaneous water and carbon dioxide removal) and liquid hydrocarbon/natural gas sweetening (hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan removal).
The product (Molecular sieves, 13X) have been used for the abstraction of water from the 100% ethanol.
Also, they are widely employed as an adsorbent in adsorption studies.
