General description

Magnesium chloride hexahydrate is a hydrated form of magnesium chloride. It is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. In molecular biology, it is used as a source of magnesium ions.

Application

Magnesium chloride hexahydrate can be used as:
  • A catalyst to synthesize dihydropyrimidine derivatives by Biginelli condensation of aldehydes, 1,3?dicarbonyl compounds, and urea.
  • A precursor salt to prepare Mg-Fe bi-metal oxide catalyst by treating with iron(II) sulfate heptahydrate. Mg-Fe bi-metal oxide is applicable as a renewable solid base catalyst to synthesize 2-aminothiophenes via Gewald′s reaction.
