General description

Dioscin is a highly fat-soluble steroid saponin found in many varieties of Dioscoreaceae plants including Dioscorea nipponica Makino.

Application

Dioscin has been used to study its anti-inflammatory and protective effects on neuron damage due to ischemia‑reperfusion injury (IRI). It has also been used as a commercial saponin to perform a comparative analysis and study its permeabilization power in respirometry technique.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Dioscin is a potent anti-tumor agent and elicits strong anti-cancer properties against several cancers like breast, renal, lung, and liver cancers, gastric carcinoma, acute myeloid leukemia. It displays hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, and nephroprotective properties. Dioscin also exerts anti-diabetic, antifungal, and antiviral effects.
