General description

Sodium sulfite is a water-soluble inorganic salt that is commonly used as a reducing agent. It is also used for sulfonation and sulfomethylation reactions. Additionally, it is used in the textile industry as a bleaching, de-sulfurizing, and dechlorinating agent. As an oxygen and free chlorine scavenger, Na2SO3 is employed in the water treatment process. Sodium sulfite participates in the purification and isolation of aldehydes and ketones by forming adducts with them. Other uses include the production of sodium thiosulfate, detergents, and dyes.

Application

Sodium sulfite can be used:
  • As a reducing agent in the hydroxylation of arylboronic acids and arylboronic esters into corresponding phenols.
  • In the transformation of α-amino alcohol methanesulfonate hydrochlorides to sodium α-amino alkanesulfonates.
  • As a SO2 precursor in the multigram synthesis of DABCO·(SO2)2 abbreviated as DABSO.
