General description

Orientin (ORI) is a luteolin derivative and water soluble 8-C-glucoside dietary flavone. It has one ketone, two ether, and phenyl groups in its chemical structure. Orientin is sourced from many medicinal plants such as Ocimum sanctum (holy basil), Phyllostachys species (bamboo leaves), Passiflora species, Trollius species, etc.

Application

Orientin has been used:
  • as an anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative agent to test its protective effects against 1,2-dimethyl hydrazine (DMH)-induced colorectal cancer in rats model
  • as a flavanoid to investigate its protective effects against mitochondrial dysfunction on antimycin-A induced murine C2C12 skeletal muscle cells
  • as a potential endonuclease inhibitor of influenza polymerase PA subunit

Biochem/physiol Actions

Orientin displays neuroprotective effects against hydrogen peroxide-induced SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. It exerts antioxidant, anti-inflammation, antiaging, antidepressant-like, vasodilation, vasorelaxant, and cardioprotective effects.
Flavonoid glycoside found in the acai tree and globe and passion flowers. Antiviral, antimicrobial and antioxidant. Exhibits radioprotective activities.
