General description

Follicular fluid meiosis-activating sterol (FF-MAS) is an intermediate in the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway present in all cells, and may represent the physiological signal that instructs the oocyte to reinitiate meiosis.

Application

FF-MAS has been used:
  • as a standard in gas chromatography/ mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) for profiling sterols of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs)
  • as Dulbecco′s modified eagle medium (DMEM) medium supplement to test its effect on cancer cell viability
  • to evaluate its effect on LXRβ-overexpressing squamous carcinoma SCC61 cells

Biochem/physiol Actions

14-demethyl-14-dehydrolanosterol (FF-MAS) was first identified in follicular fluid of women and plays a key role in oocyte nuclear maturation. The levels of FF-MAS may be regulated by cytochrome P450 family 27 subfamily A member 1. Supplementation of FF-MAS to oocytes promotes meiotic maturation favoring preimplantation. However, FF-MAS has low solubility and is metabolized to cholesterol rapidly.
