General description

Soybean oil (SBO) is a vegetable oil widely used as biodegradable lubricant. It increases left ventricular contractility associated myosin ATPase and sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium pump (SERCA2a) in isolated hearts from rats. SBO is shown to reduce both total and non-HDL serum cholesterol and triglycerides induced by atherogenic diet in rats. It may be transesterified to biodiesel using CaO as a solid base catalyst. It may also be transesterified to biodiesel using methanol and ethanol.

Application

Soybean oil from Sigma is suitable for use:
  • in the determination of freezing point of soybean oil
  • as a standard at 0.1% in chloroform during the quantification of lipid by a vanillin-phosphoric acid reaction
  • as a delivery vehicle of α-lipoic acid
  • to dissolve tamoxifen
It may be used as a crude source for triglycerides and other lipids. Soybean oil is a potential raw material in oxygenated fatty acid production. It may be used in the synthesis of epoxidized-soybean oil (ESO).
