Cell Line Origin
Human caucasian mammary carcinoma
Cell Line Description
The mammary carcinoma cell line MFM-223 was obtained from the pleural effusion of a postmenopausal breast cancer patient. The patient had not received any prior treatment and the tumour was classified as a widespread ductal mammary carcinoma with the histological grade of III. The cell line is characterised by high androgen, (approximately 100,000 binding sites per cell) and low oestrogen and progesterone receptor levels. Proliferation of cells was inhibited by addition of the androgen dihydrotestosterone at concentrations above 0.01 nM. MFM-223 have a characteristic pattern of isoenzyme polymorphism and of karyotype alterations revealing marker chromosomes and homogenously staining regions. Most cells have been near diploid with 10% displaying near tetraploidy. The cells have been tested to be free of Hepatitis B and C viruses and HIV. MFM-223 is tumourigenic in nude mice.
Application
