Gene Information

General description

FGF basic (FGF2) is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members bind heparin and possess broad mitogenic and angiogenic activities. FGF2 is involved in diverse biological processes, such as limb and nervous system development, wound healing, and tumor growth. FGF2 mRNA contains multiple polyadenylation sites, and is alternatively translated from AUG and non-AUG (CUG) initiation codons resulting in five different isoforms with distinct properties. The CUG-initiated isoforms are localized in the nucleus and are responsible for the intracrine effect, whereas, the AUG-initiated form is mostly cytosolic and is responsible for the paracrine and autocrine effects of this FGF.
This antibody can cross-react with native and heat-inactivated basic FGF but will not neutralize biological activity. Upstate recommends anti-FGF-2/basic FGF, neutralizing (Catalog #05-117) for neutralizing activity.

Specificity

This antibody detects FGF-2/basic FGF.
This highly specific antibody does not cross-react with bovine acidic FGF (FGF-1, HBGF-1).

Important Note: This antibody can cross-react with native and heat-inactivated basic FGF but will not neutralize biological activity (Uteza, Y., 1999). Upstate recommends anti-FGF-2/basic FGF, clone bFM-1 (neutralizing) (Catalog # 05-117) for neutralizing activity.

Immunogen

Purified bovine brain basic FGF (FGF-2, HBGF-2). Clone bFM-2.

Application

Detect FGF-2/basic FGF using this Anti-FGF-2/basic FGF Antibody, clone bFM-2 validated for use in IH, RIA & WB.
Immunohistochemistry:
Previous lots of this antibody have been shown to immunostain frozen brain sections fixed with ice-cold, ethanol:acetic acid [95:5]. This antibody has also been used at 10 μg/mL to stain paraffin-embedded sections (Matsuzaki, K., 1989).
