General description
Ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) is the simplest asymmetric ester. It can be prepared via transesterification between dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and ethanol with mild reaction conditions. It is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of various compounds. Additionally, EMC is also used as an excellent co-solvent in the electrolyte of lithium-ion batteries.
Application
Ethyl methyl carbonate can be used as:
- A solvent for various reactions including esterification and amidation.
- An electrolyte in the development of graphite-based dual-ion batteries due to its ability reduces charge-transfer resistance, polarization, and self-discharge of graphite electrodes. It also enhances Coulombic efficiency, cycle, and rate performances.
