General description
Aflatoxin B1 is the most toxic aflatoxin. Aflatoxins are hepatotoxic metabolites, that are produced by molds, such as Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxins contaminate human food and animal feed. They are linked to liver cancer, immune system suppression, reduced growth rates, losses in feed efficiency and death. They are naturally found toxic carcinogens and the most widely known mycotoxins. They mainly contaminate fruits, vegetables and grains.
Application
Aflatoxin B1 is a carcinogenic compound that induces transversion of G to T at codon 249 of the p53 tumor suppressor gene.
Aflatoxin B1-BSA Conjugate from Aspergillus flavus has been used in immunization of mice with phage and synthetic peptide. It is also used as a target molecule in si field-effect transistor (FET) biosensing techniques.
Warning
Possibly carcinogenic.
