General description

Carrageenans are mucopolysaccharides from the cell walls of the red algae. They are anionic linear polymers composed of 1,3α-1,4β-galactans having one (κ-), two (ι-) or three (λ-) sulfates per disaccharide unit. In ionic solutions, κ- and ι-carrageenans self-associate into helical structures that form rigid or flexible gels, respectively. λ-carrageenans do not form helices and are non-gelling. Carrageenans are used commercially as thickeners and stabilizing agents.
insoluble in hot concentrated salt solutions

Application

Carrageenans are used to suppress immune response in vivo and in vitro via mechanisms believed to involve selective cytopathic effect on macrophages. As ι-, κ-, and λ-carrageenans have varying degress of sulfation, they may be studied comparatively for differences in protective, antiviral, and immunosuppression activities.
May be used in immobilization of microbial cells based on the growth of cell in gel[1][2]

Carrageenans obtained from seaweeds can be processed into films for a range of applications including food packaging. The level of carrageenan refinement during extraction can influence the key properties, with semi-refined carrageenan (SRC) containing more impurities than the more refined

Polysaccharides such as kappa carrageenan are often utilised in fat replacement techniques in the food industry. However, the structural role they can provide within a product is limited by their hydrophilic nature. Hydrophilic particles can be surface-activated by hydrophobic modification

Questions

1–8 of 8 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. Is this powder free of proteases & nucleases?

    1 answer
    1. Protease and nuclease testing are not conducted on this product, so their absence cannot be guaranteed.

  4. Does the carrageenan automatically form a gel after dissolution in hot water ? What happens when the solution cools down ?

    1 answer
    1. This product has not undergone testing to confirm gel formation after dissolution in hot water, nor has a specific rheological study been conducted under these conditions. It is understood that κ- and ι-carrageenans self-associate into helical structures that can form either rigid or flexible gels in ionic solutions containing potassium and calcium ions. It is anticipated that an aqueous solution can be prepared in hot water, with the addition of salt, leading to gel formation as the solution cools, as noted in Fateha et al. 2021 IOP Conf. Ser.: Earth Environ. Sci. 715 012055.

  6. Is this k-carrageenan food grade?

    1 answer
    1. No. This product is intended for research use only. Currently, a food grade κ-Carrageenan product is not available.

  7. Hi, I'm interested to know how the K-carrageenan is synthesized. Do you use more green production methods such as enzyme assisted extraction, or the more traditional method? Thanks, Rowan

    1 answer
    1. This K-carrageenan product comes from a family of sulphated polysaccharides extracted from certain species of red seaweed. Carrageenan is a cell wall hydrocolloid found in certain species of seaweeds belonging to red algae (class: Rhodophyceae). Carrageenan is extracted with water under neutral or alkaline conditions at elevated temperatures. The exact method of preparation is considered proprietary.

  8. Can we use this type of carrageenan for inflammatory induction?

    1 answer
    1. Carrageenans are commonly used for inflammation induction. This product (22048) is the kappa isoform. The iota and lambda form are also available - see C1138, 22049, and C1013 for additional options. These products are not tested for use as an inflammation induction agent. The end-user would be responsible for determining suitability.
