General description

Bisphenol S (BPS), belonging to the class of bisphenols, is a structural analog of bisphenol A (BPA), used in a variety of industrial applications and products marketed as BPA-free.[1] It is commonly identified in food and beverages,[2] environmental samples,[3] biological matrices, etc.[4] It is also reported to be used in the production of epoxy resins.[2] BPS is also found to be stable compared to BPA at elevated temperature and sunlight conditions.[3]
This substance is listed on the positive list of the EU regulation 10/2011 for plastics intended to come into contact with food. Find all available reference materials for compounds listed in 10/2011 here

Application

Bisphenol S may be used as an analytical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in:
  • Beverages using liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).[2]
  • Biological samples using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS).[4]
  • Environmental water samples using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detection.[3]

  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
      For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
      For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature.   3. What is the solubility information for products with product numbers 45705 and 43034?

    1. For product number 45705, solubility has not been tested in-house.
      The following solubility recommendations are provided: in DMF, DMSO, and ethanol, it is 30 mg/ml; and in an Ethanol:PBS (pH 7.2) (1:1) mixture, it is 0.5 mg/ml.
      Regarding product number 43034, although in-house solubility testing has not been conducted, however, it is soluble in ethanol and ether, slightly soluble in benzene and DMSO, and insoluble in water.

    powder form

    Although solubility in water is reported by some at 715 mg/L at 20°C (Phenol, 4,4’-sulfonylbis- (BPS) Evaluation statement 30 June 2022, Australian Government), I found the real limit to be lower than this. The product is under fine powder form, not pellets, therefore caution is needed when handling
