Gene Information

human ... ACTB(60)

General description

ACTB (actin β) gene codes for β-actin. It is a cytoskeletal housekeeping protein. It is present in the cytoplasm. This gene is located on human chromosome 7p22.1.
Beta-actin is a nonmuscle cytoskeletal protein in all human cell types and is involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity. There are six different actin isoforms in human. Antibody to beta-actin provides a specific and useful tool in studying the intracellular distribution of beta-actin and the static and dynamic aspects of the cytoskeleton.

Immunogen

Synthetic peptide near the N-terminus of human beta-Actin protein.

Application

Anti-Actin-Beta antibody has been used in western blotting.

Biochem/physiol Actions

β-Actin modulates cell growth, migration and the G-actin pool. Mutations in ACTB leads to pleiotropic developmental disorder.
