The gene AFP (α fetoprotein) encodes a plasma glycoprotein that has a molar mass of 70kDa. The gene is mapped to human chromosome 4. The gene is evolutionarily-related to serum albumin, which is also mapped to human chromosome 4. It is synthesized along with serum albumin during the development of embryonic yolk sac and the liver.
Immunogen
AFP antibody was raised against a 14 amino acid peptide near the amino terminus of human AFP.
Application
Anti-AFP antibody produced in rabbit has been used in immunoflorescence.
Biochem/physiol Actions
α-fetoprotein encoded by the gene AFP is involved in the regulation of fatty acids in both fetal and proliferating adult liver cells. Its expression is found to be increased in acute liver injuries, indicating active liver regeneration. It has been associated with fatty liver disease (FLD), a disease that may lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. It serves as a tumor marker for HCC (hepatocellular carcinoma).

Stem cell transplantation to the liver is a promising therapeutic strategy for a variety of disorders. Hepatocyte transplantation has short-term efficacy but can be problematic due to portal hypertension, inflammation, and sinusoidal thrombosis. We have previously transplanted small mouse endoderm
In liver cancer, leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein coupled receptor 5 (LGR5) compartment represents an important tumor-initiating cell (TIC) population and served as a potential therapeutic target. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) is a critical part of the tumor microenvironment, heavily influenced TIC function

Pleurotus eryngii is a medicinal/edible mushroom with great nutritional value and bioactivity. Its polysaccharide has recently been developed into an effective gene vector via cationic modification. In the present study, cationized P. eryngii polysaccharide (CPS), hybridized with calcium phosphate (CP)

Albumin and alpha-fetoprotein are structurally related serum proteins, having a similar gene structure and, conceivably, a common evolutionary origin. To test their relative arrangement in the human genome, the serum albumin and alpha-fetoprotein genes were mapped by in situ hybridization
The clinical course of acute viral hepatitis A (AHA) is highly variable. Serum alphafetoprotein (AFP) level is often elevated in various types of acute liver injuries, indicating active liver regeneration. This study was aimed to investigate the clinical significance of
