General description

Sucrose, a disaccharide consisting of glucose and fructose, serves as an energy source in numerous biological processes. In cell culture, sucrose functions as a cryoprotectant, preserving cell viability during freezing and thawing while also helping to maintain osmotic balance and enhance cell survival. Moreover, sucrose finds utility as a supplement in plant, insect, and bacterial culture media, and it is applied in various enzymatic assays. In biomedical research, it plays a role as an osmolyte, an algal metabolite, a Saccharomyces cerevisiae metabolite, an E. coli metabolite, and a mouse metabolite.

Application

Sucrose has been used
  • in a growth medium to study the molecular and biochemical aspects of plant-pathogen interactions and plant immune responses
  • as a cryoprotectant in a study involving antibiotic-induced changes to the gut microbiota and their effects on neuroimmune interactions

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sucrose serves as a vital energy source, undergoing metabolic conversion to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for cellular functions and cellular respiration. In plant biology, sucrose is central to photosynthesis and acts as a storage carbohydrate in various plant parts. In Cell Biology, it helps maintain osmotic balance in cells, acts as a cryoprotectant in laboratory settings, and participates in biosynthesis, leading to the formation of secondary metabolites.

Features and Benefits

  • Suitable for cell biology and biochemical research
  • Tested to confirm low levels of heavy metal contamination, ensuring suitability for various applications
  • Tested for anion and cation traces
  • ACS grade sucrose, sourced from sugar cane
