General description

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) belongs to the immunoglobulin family. It is found as two subclasses, that is, IgA1 and IgA2. IgA1 has an extended hinge because of the insertion of a duplicated stretch of amino acids, whereas IgA2 lacks this. IgA exists as a monomer or dimer in the secreted form. Dimeric IgA has a molecular weight of 390kDa. This antibody can form multimers and its polymerization is essential for transport across epithelia. IgA is crucial as the first line of defence. Limited digestion using papain cleaves the antibody into three fragments, two of which are identical and contain the antigen-binding activity. They are known as Fragment antigen binding (Fab) fragments. The third fragment does not possess antigen-binding activity and is known as fragment crystallizable (Fc). It interacts with cells and effector molecules. The heavy and light chains are folded into globular domains. VH, Cα1, Cα2 and Cα3 are the four domains in each heavy chain and VL and CL are the two domains in each light chain. IgA is found in mucus, tears and milk.

Specificity

This product was prepared from monospecific antiserum by immunoaffinity chromatography using Ferret IgA coupled to agarose beads followed by solid phase adsorption(s) to remove any unwanted reactivities. Assay by immunoelectrophoresis resulted in a single precipitin arc against Anti-Goat Serum, Ferret IgA and Ferret Serum. No reaction was observed against Ferret IgG or Ferret IgM. Specificity was confirmed by ELISA at less than 1% cross reactivity against other Ferret heavy or light chain isotypes.

Immunogen

Ferret IgA alpha heavy chain
