General description

Antioxidants are molecules which act as reducing agents by donating electrons to free radicals to stabilize them and minimize the damage caused by free radicals to DNA, cells and organ systems. Antioxidants include substances such as polyphenols; flavonoids; vitamins and enzymes like glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. They are known to have beneficial health effects such as lowering the risk of cancer, heart disease and neurodegenerative disorders and are abundantly found in plants, fruits, vegetables, beverages and natural products.

Principle

Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay is a widely used method that uses antioxidants as reductants in a redox-linked colorimetric reaction, wherein Fe3+ is reduced to Fe2+. Ferric (Fe3+) to ferrous (Fe2+) ion reduction at low pH causes formation of a colored ferrous-probe complex from a colorless ferric-probe complex. The assay is high-throughput adaptable and can detect antioxidant capacities as low as 0.2 mM Fe2+ equivalents.

  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
      For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
      For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature.   3. Does the kit come with instructions for using microcuvette volumes instead of microplate volumes?

    1. If the total volume of the reaction in a 96-well plate (200 µL) is suitable for the cuvette being used, the same reaction can be used in the cuvette. However, if the volume is not sufficient, adjustments will need to be made to accommodate the volume change.
