General description
Clathrin consists of three heavy chains, along with three light chains. The weight of heavy chains varies depending on the source of clathrin. It forms a three-legged structure, termed triskelion with three clathrin heavy chains (molecular weight 180,000 daltons per chain) and three non-covalently bound light chains having molecular weights of 30,000-40,000 daltons per chain. Although the term clathrin was originally used to designate the heavy chain component of triskelions, clathrin is now used to refer to the entire triskelion protein molecule.
Specificity
The product specifically labels the heavy chain band of clathrin by immunoblotting.
Immunogen
clathrin from bovine brain coated vesicles
Application
Anti-Clathrin antibody was used:
- for incubating trophozites (2.105) in a study to determine the role of clathrin in endocytic process of fluid-phase pathway.
- in indirect immunofluorescence staining.
- for immunocytohistochemistry study of human platelets to study the colocalization of adhesive proteins with clathrin in human blood platelets.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Clathrin is the main constituent of the polygonal network that forms the layer of coated vesicles and coated pits. It is widely assumed that coated vesicles mediate the selective transfer of molecules and membrane components between specific membranous organelles within cells. It is a type of protein which plays an important function within the cell, including various types of intracellular transport processes.
