Application

Poly(ethyleneimine) is a water soluble polymer used as a membrane lubricant for filtering frozen cell membranes. PEI cellulose in small columns will separate cyclic nucleotides from related compounds at the same electrolyte concentration that is used for thin layer chromatography on PEI cellulose-coated plates. PEI solution may also be used in the synthesis of a nanofibrous membrane, which may be used in the adsorption of anionic dyes and heavy metal ions from wastewater samples.[1]

Questions

1–10 of 11 Questions
  1. Is this PEI branched or linear?

    1 answer
    1. This product is an aqueous solution of a branched polyethyleneimine polymer.

      Helpful?

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  6. There is no expiry date on the material bottle or CoA of P3143. Is there an expiry date for this product?

    1 answer
    1. This product is not assigned an expiration date or recommended retest date. Products with no expiration date or recommended retest date should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected. These products are also subject to a one year warranty from the date of shipment. 8. What is the molar concentration of Product P3143, Poly(ethyleneimine) solution?

    1 answer
    1. This product is nominally a 50% w/v solution of PEI in water, meaning 50 grams of poly(ethyleneimine) per 100 mL of solution. Concentrations of polymer solutions (such as PEI) are commonly reported either as a percentage or mg/mL, not in terms of molarity.

  9. Do you have any references that describe using Product P3143, Poly(ethyleneimine) solution, in enzyme isolation or for transfections?

    1 answer
    1. For enzyme isolation, see:J.J. Jendrisak and R.R. Burgess, Biochem., 14(21), 4639-4645 (1975), "A new method for the large-scale purification of wheat germ DNA-dependent RNA polymerase II".This paper describes preparing a 10% stock solution, which was adjusted to pH 7.9 by adding hydrochloric acid.PEI has also been used for the precipitation of nucleic acids in the purification process of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases:von der Haar, F., "Purification of Aminoacyl-tRNA Synthetases", Methods in Enzymology, 59, 257-267 (1979).For transfections, see the following references:Boussif, O. et al., "A versatile vector for gene and oligonucleotide transfer into cells in culture and in vivo: Polyethylenimine." 10. The product description of Product P3143, Poly(ethyleneimine) solution, on sigmaaldrich.com appears to give two molecular weight values, Mn and Mw. What do those abbreviations stand for, and why are the two values so different?

    1 answer
    1. Mn is the number average molecular weight. This corresponds to the "true average" or mean; that is, the sum of the molecular weights divided by the number of molecules. Mw is the weight average molecular weight. This corresponds to the median value; that is, there are as many molecules smaller than the weight average molecular weight as there are larger than the weight average molecular weight. The fact that the two molecular weight values are so different means that there is a large, non-symmetrical distribution of molecular weights; the largest molecules probably have a molecular weight of several million.
