General description

Ficoll® Solution is a highly branched polymer of sucrose, also known as polydisperse mixtures of dextran. Ficoll® molecules are inert and not re-absorbed by proximal tubules. The structure is open and deformable, and not a rigid sphere thereby becoming a preferred choice in “crowding” experiments.
Used in electrophoresis and as a hapten carrier. Most commonly used to prepare density gradients.

Application

Ficoll® has been used in

  • Isolation of cord blood mononuclear cells
  • Isolation of CD133 negative cells
  • Isolation and expansion of circulating endothelial progenitor cells.

Other Notes

A nonionic synthetic polymer of sucrose.
