General description

Ceramide is a sphingolipid metabolite.[1] It is composed of sphingosine base linked via amide linkage to a fatty acid.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ceramide plays a role in cell signaling processes, such as cell cycle arrest and promotes apoptosis. It is also involved in signal transduction processes and insulin resistance.[3] Ceramide also plays a role in cell proliferation, differentiation and inflammatory responses.[1]
