General description

2-(cyclohexylamino)ethanesulfonic acid (CHES) is a zwitterionic amphiphilic compound, which consists of a hydrophobic cyclohexyl, a hydrophilic amino, and a sulfonic acid group. It is used as a buffer in specific biological processes; the useful pH range being 8.6-10.

Application

CHES is used as a buffer for the investigation of pH-dependent processes in a biological research application such as enzymology. It is also used as a refolding buffer for the separation of chiral polychlorinated biphenyls by micellar electrokinetic chromatography. Bovine whey proteins were detected using CHES buffer of pH=10.2.
