UbcH9 mediates the conjugation of SUMO-1, SUMO-2, and SUMO-3 to a diverse variety of proteins without the help of an E3 ligase. This E2 conjugating enzyme interacts directly with protein substrates that are modified by SUMOylation, and may help in substrate recognition. UbcH9 is specific for the conjugation of proteins modified by SUMOylation.
Physical form
Solution in 50 mM HEPES, pH 7.5, 100 mM NaCl, 10 % glycerol, 1mM TCEP.
Ubiquitin conjugating enzymes participate in the thioester cascade that leads to protein ubiquitination. Although Ubc9 is homologous to E2 ubiquitin conjugating enzymes we have shown that it is unable to form a thioester with ubiquitin, but can form a thioester
