General description

Silver nitrate stains substance with brown-black color. It is unstable at a temperature >100°C and loses its chromatographic properties.

Application

Silver nitrate has been used:
  • in the synthesis of colloidal silver nanoparticles
  • in von Kossa staining of differentiated osteogenically driven human mesenchymal stem cells, osteoblasts and mineralized nodules
  • in the approach of developing a new myelin silver stain

Biochem/physiol Actions

Silver nitrate solution is originally used as an antiseptic agent and to treat burn wounds. Treatment with hypotonic silver nitrate solution might result in hyponatremia, an electrolyte abnormality.
