Endogener Neurotransmitter an Adenosin-Rezeptoren. Der cardioprotective Effekt könnte auf der Aktivierung des A₁-Adenosin-Rezeptors beruhen. Die gerinnungshemmende und entzündungshemmende Wirkung von Adenosin scheint über den A₂-Adenosin-Rezeptor vermittelt zu werden. Im Gegensatz dazu scheint Adenosin ein proinflammatorischer Mediator bei Asthma und chronisch obstruktiver Lungenerkrankung (COPD) zu sein.
