Application

Testosterone has been used as a standard to study the developmental profile of steroid hormones in male and female rat brains[1]. This hormone has also been used to evaluate its effects on muscle mass and signaling in mice[2].

Biochem/physiol Actions

Vom Hoden freigesetztes Testosteron wird im Zielgewebe zum Dihydrotestosteron umgewandelt und scheint dort viele der biologischen Aktionen von Testosteron zu aktivieren. Androgene lenken die Entwicklung des männlichen Phenotypus während der Embryogenese und der Pubertät.

Preparation Note

Testosterone dissolves in chloroform at 100 mg/ml to yield a clear, colorless to very faint yellow solution. It is also soluble in methanol, absolute ethanol (0.5 mg/ml), 45 percent (w/v) aqueous 2-hydroxypropyl-b-cyclodextrin (18.2 mg/ml), vegetable oils and dioxane. It is slightly soluble in methyl oleate and insoluble in water.

    1. This product has not been tested for cell culture use. We offered Testosterone for cell culture, now discontinued, and for it our 1998 Sigma Cell Culture advised to dissolve 1 mg in 2.0 mL absolute ethanol, gently swirl to dissolve, then add 48 mL sterile medium to prepare 20 ug/ml stock solution. Working range: 20-300 ng/ml.
